- Kentucky encyclopedia, ©1992:page 473 ("George W. Johnson" the first governor of Confederate Kentucky. Born near Georgetown in Scott Co. on May 27, 1811. Received three degrees from Transylvania University. Farmed and was elected to the state House of Representatives in 1838, 1839 and 1840 as a Democrat. Kentucky was admitted into the Confederate States of America on December 10, 1861 with Johnson as its governor. His jurisdiction only extended as far as the Confederate troops advanced. When the Confederates abandoned the state in early 1862, Johnson and his associates followed the main army. Was wounded on April 7, 1862 at Shiloh and died the next day.)

- George W. Johnson (governor); George Washington Johnson (May 27, 1811-April 8, 1862) was the first Confederate governor of Kentucky. A lawyer-turned-farmer from Scott County, Kentucky. On November 18, 1861, 116 delegates representing 68 Kentucky counties convened at the Clark House in Russellville. Over the next three days, a shadow government was established with Bowling Green as its temporary capital. Johnson was unanimously chosen as governor of the new Confederate state. He died from wounds suffered at the Battle of Shiloh, Tennessee ( (Wikipedia, June 14, 2021) )
