(1944); graduate work at the law school at the University of California at Berkeley; a doctoral program at Yale Law School (1965); opened her own practice and became involved in local politics; compiled a volume titled States' Laws on Race and Color (1951); worked with the prestigious New York law firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison; taught at the Ghana School of Law in Accra (1960); cofounded of the National Organization for Women; became the first woman of color ordained to the priesthood of the Episcopal Church; her prize-winning autobiography Song in a Weary Throat: An American Pilgrimage (1987), was published posthumously; died 01 July 1985 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States)
