- Encyc. of Ukraine:v. 2, p. 474 (Khmelnytskyi; the capital of Khmelnytskyi oblast. Until 1954 it was called Proskuriv, when it was renamed in honor of B. Khmelnytsky. First mentioned in sources of 1493 as the Polish outpost of Ploskyriv (Polish: Płoskirów); it was fortified in the 16th cent. In 1780 the town was renamed Proskuriv. In 1793 it had come under Russian rule and by 1797 was a county center in Podilia gubernia. Under Soviet rule from 1920, it became an okruha center (1923-1930, 1935-1937) and then an oblast capital (in 1941 and 1944-1954 of Kamianets-Podilskyi oblast))
