New Zealand gazetteer, via WWW, viewed on October 30, 2024:search for place names (Napier; feature type: city; location: 40.356S 175.617E; history/origin/meaning: originally Ahuriri; in 1855 William Seed, the postmaster at Ahuriri, wrote that he needed a date stamp and seal bearing the name of the post office, and asked that Napier rather than Ahuriri be used. The name commemorates Sir Charles Napier, the commander-in-chief of British forces in India. The new name was not adopted until 1858; land district: Hawke's Bay)
