The village was first mentioned in historical documents of 1564 when it was part of Poland. The town was captured by Cossacks in 1648 and its castle was destroyed by the Turks in 1672. At the first partition of Poland in 1772 Skalat was annexed by Austria, and in 1867 it became a county center of Galicia crownland. Between 1919 and 1939 the town was under Polish rule)
