- Fano was the son of Ugo and Angelica Fano. He was born in Mantua and died in Verona. He studied from 1888 to 1892 at the University of Turin under Corrado Segre from between 1888-1892. It was there that he met Guido Castelnuovo and specialized in geometry. He met Felix Klein while at Göttingen during 1893-4 (he had translated Klein's Erlangen programme into Italian (Annali di matematica, 2nd ser., 17 [1889-1890], 307-343), while he was an undergraduate. In 1901 Fano was appointed professor at the University of Turin, and he taught there until 1938, when the new Fascist laws deprived him of his position. He escaped to Switzerland and during World War II he taught Italian students at an international camp near Lausanne. After 1946 Fano lectured in the United States and Italy. In 1911 he married Rosetta Cassin; two sons became professors in the United States. ( (Fano, Gino, LC record via VIAF.) )
