  • The New York Times, Bahram Beyzaie, filmmaker who led Iran's New Wave, dies at 87, Jan. 9, 2026, viewed January 10, 2026(filmmaker, playwright and scholar, hailed as a giant of Iranian culture for leading the nation's cinematic New Wave in the late 1960s; born December 26, 1938 in Tehran; raised in the Bahá'i faith, a persecuted religious minority; wrote more than 70 books, plays and screenplays; left university after a year to pursue independent research on Iranian theater; initially gained fame in the theater, beginning with "The Dolls" in 1962; his 2016 work "Tarabnameh", based on traditional Takhte-Hozi plays that combined music, comedy, dance and poetry, ran in two parts for 10 hours; wrote and directed 10 feature films, beginning with "Downpour" (1972); his stature in Iran's cultural world rose during the 1960s; helped found Iran's Writer's Association and became a theater instructor at his former university; by the end of the 1960s he had begun directing films for Kanoon, an Iranian institute devoted to intellectual development of children and young adults; despite constant battle against government censorship, he continued to make movies until the mid-2000s; left Iran in 2010 to assume his post at Stanford, where he was a lecturer in Iranian studies for 15 years, also ran acting workshops and staged plays there; died on December 26 at his home in Palo Alto, California, age 87)
