  • Wikipedia, Italian version, December 19, 2024(Egidio Osio; born Milan, 16 June 1840; died Milan, 27 March 1902; Italian general; student at the Collegio Longone run by the Padri Barnabiti; then moved to the Collegio Borromeo in Pavia for law studies but spent just one year there; in spring 1859 he secretly went to Piemonte to enlist as a volunteer private in the Armata Sarda, 10o Reggimento, Brigata Regina, part of the Divisione commanded by General Garibaldi, and fought in the second Italian war of independence; he then attended the Accademia Militare, obtaining the rank of Sottotenente in 1860; participated in the campaign in southern Italy; in 1867-68 he took part, as a military observer, in the British expedition in Abyssinia against Negus Teodoro II; from 1879 he was military attaché at the Regio Ambasciata italiana, Berlin; hile in Berlin, Colonel Osio developed a friendship with the son of Kaiser Wilhelm I of Germany, Prince Fridrich Wilhelm Nikolaus of Prussia; the latter recommended him to King Umberto I a few years later as a tutor for his son Vittorio Emanuele, which role he began on 9 May 1881, solely responsible for his education; he took leave in November 1889 when Vittorio Emanuele turned twenty and obtained the rank of colonel; in 1886 Osio had married Maria Scanzi, which whom he had three children; he was promoted to Maggior Generale in 1892 and Tenente Generale in 1898, then appointed Comandante della Divisione Militare di Milano; purchased a large hill in Selvino to permit his ill son, Umberto Margherita, to breathe the mountain air; after his death in Milan, March 27, 1902, his widow built a villa designed by him, Villa Osio, which contributed to tourist development of Selvino)
