- Funeral Home Website by Batesville, Inc., viewed Sept. 16, 2015(Dunston Milner, longtime newspaper reporter, author, football coach, journalism professor and former book review columnist, died Sunday, Dec. 11, 2011, at his home in Fort Worth. Jay was born Oct. 30, 1923 in Colorado Springs, Colo. He attended Texas Technological College, now Texas Tech University, and left college to join the U.S. Navy during World War II. After his military service, he earned B.A. in 1948 and M.A. in 1951 from University of Southern Mississippi, where he also played football. After college, Jay worked at the Hattiesburg American, and later as managing editor for the Delta Democrat Times, Greenville, Miss. He covered political races and racial injustice news, which was the subject of his first book, "Incident at Ashton." In 1959, he moved to New York to serve as assistant to the editorial page editor for the New York Herald Tribune. In 1965, he moved back to Texas and joined the faculty of Texas Christian University as professor of journalism, and in 1969 joined Southern Methodist University as acting chair of the journalism department. He then moved to Lufkin, where he was writing a book review column for 15 years. He returned to Fort Worth in 1995 and began work on his memoir, "Confessions of a Maddog: A Romp through the High-flying Texas Music and Literary Era of the Fifties to the Seventies." The book was published in 1998)
