- NUCMC data from Maine Hist. Soc. for His Letter, 1858(Brooks was born in Portland, Me., attended Brown University for two years, and taught school and edited a newspaper in Haverhill, Mass. In 1836, his brother James Brooks was one of the founders of the New York Daily Express and Erastus Brooks wrote articles and editorials for the paper. He served in the New York State Senate, 1854-1857, and the New York State Assembly, 1878-1879 and 1881-1883)
