- African American women, 1993:pages 261-263 (Jane Edna (Harris) Hunter; December 13, 1882-January 18, 1971, community center founder; born near Pendleton, South Carolina. Worked as a domestic servant from age ten to fourteen, when she began to work and attend school at Ferguson Academy in Abbeville, S.C., graduating in 1900, Moved to Charleston, SC, where she attended the Cannon Street Hospital and Training School for Nurses, then the Dixie Hospital and Training at Hampton Institute. Moved to Cleveland, Ohio where she founded the Phillis Wheatley Association home in 1913. Retired as director in 1946. Received a law degree from Cleveland Law College and passed the Ohio Bar in 1925. Died in Cleveland, Ohio)
