Kuhn, Commissioner of Baseball, and the American and National Leagues over baseball's reserve clause, preventing individuals from negotiating with teams that desire their services; lost case but generated enormous publicity and discussion about the reserve clause and eventually baseball owners agreed to salary arbitration, the beginning of the end of the reserve clause (1972); died 20 January 1997 in Los Angeles, California, United States)
