She was one of the first post-revolutionary expatriates to return to her country in 1973. Casal was also among the individuals who initiated and promoted a dialog between Cuban emigrants and the Cuban government during the winter of 1978. She received her Ph.D. in Social Psychology from the New School for Social Research in 1975. Having taught at Rutgers, Hofstra, Princeton and the University of Illinois, Casal was selected as a Latin American Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, Smithsonian Institution during the 1978-1979 academic year. Among Casal's publications are the Cuban minority in the U.S., and Contra viento y marea (Against all odds).)
