- Wikipedia, 15 May 2023(Johnny Bright; John Dee Bright; b. 11 June 1930 in Fort Wayne, IN; d. 14 Dec. 1983 in Edmonton, AB; American professional football player in the Canadian Football League; played football, basketball, and track at Central High School in Fort Wayne, IN and at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa; in October 1951, was the first African-American athlete of significance to play against Oklahoma A&M at their home stadium and suffered significant injuries in "Johnny Bright Incident" after which Drake Univ. withdrew from the conference in protest; first pick of the Philadelphia Eagles in the first round of the 1952 NFL draft (which would have made him the Eagles' "first Negro player") but chose instead to play for the Calvery Stampeders; was later traded to the Edmonton Eskimos and played in Edmonton for over a decade before retiring from professional football; served as teacher, coach, and school administrator in schools in Edmonton; became Canadian citizen in 1962)
