Byatt, was an English critic, novelist, poet and short story writer; she attended Newnham College, Cambridge, Bryn Mawr College (in the United States), and Somerville College, Oxford; she married Ian Charles Rayner Byatt in 1959; Byatt lectured in the Department of Extra-Mural Studies of the University of London (1962-1971) and the Central School of Art and Design and from 1972 to 1983 at University College London; she began writing full-time in 1983; her marriage was dissolved in 1969 and later that year, she married Peter Duffy; Byatt was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 1990 New Year Honours, and was promoted to Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE), "for services to Literature", in Elizabeth II's 1999 Birthday Honours; in 2008, The Times named her on its list of the 50 greatest British writers since 1945)
