- Wikipedia, viewed 29 March 2018(Dr John Muir CIE FRSEDCL LLD (5 February 1810 - 7 March 1882) was a Scottish Sanskrit scholar and Indologist and judge in India. Born in Glasgow, he arrived in India with the East India Company in 1829 as a civil servant, working first in Bengal. In 1844, he was appointed to be the first principal of Victoria College, Benaras. From 1842 to 1853 he was a Session Judge in the court at Futtehpore. He left the Indian Civil Service in 1853 and returned to Edinburgh. In 1861 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He was a D.C.L. of Oxford, LL.D. of Edinburgh and Ph.D. of Bonn, and was one of the first to receive the distinction of Companion of the Indian Empire. Muir died on 7 March 1882, at 10 Merchiston Avenue, Edinburgh.)
