He received his initial education from Scottish Presbyterian missionary (1890s). He also attended a small African American theological college in Lynchburg, Virginia (1897). He returned to southern Nyasaland as ordained Baptist minister (1900) and founded the Providence Industrial Mission in Chiradzulu; he was chairman of the Native Industrial Union (1909). He led an armed insurrection and was killed; 15 January is commemorated as John Chilembwe Day in Malawi. He died 1915 in Malawi)
