  • DNB online, Jan. 21, 2014(access point: Bowyer, William; born Dec. 19, 1699, Dogwell Court, Whitefriars, London; only surviving son of William Bowyer, printer, and his 2nd wife Dorothy Allport, daughter of Thomas Dawks of London, printer, and his wife Anne; primary education at a private school in Headley, Surrey, under Ambrose Bonwicke; sent by his father to U. Cambridge, 1716, and remained until 1722; his father wishing to place a learned corrector at the head of the firm, joined the firm in 1722, the functions of scholar and printer being complementary; twice married: 1) his mother's niece, Ann Prudom, Oct. 9, 1728 (who died 1731), St. Clement Danes, Strand, London; 2) Elizabeth Bill (died Jan. 14, 1771) on Aug. 21, 1747, she having been long his housekeeper; in 1757 took on as apprentice John Nichols, who ultimately rose to equal partner, allowing B. the more congenial tasks of annotating, commenting, emending, epitomizing, indexing and translating; died London, Nov. 18, 1777, buried in Low Leyton, Essex)
