He was raised at the Polish royal court, and entered the service of King Sigismund II August. He adopted Calvinism but later reconverted to Orthodoxy in 1574. In 1593 he was made Bishop of Volodymyr and Brest. He later helped to lead the sobor that culminated in the Church Union of Berestia. In 1599 Potii became the second Uniate metropolitan of Kiev and Halych (1600-1613). Potii, as a noted polemicist wrote in Ukrainian, Polish, and Latin)
