- Albrecht Dürer the Younger (also Duerer; Latinized Albertus Durerus; born May 21, 1471 in Nuremberg; died April 6, 1528 in the same city) was a German painter, graphic artist, mathematician, and art theorist. With his consistently signed paintings, drawings, and widely distributed copperplate engravings and woodcuts, he is considered one of the outstanding representatives of the Renaissance. His landscape watercolors are among the earliest of their kind, as are his self-portraits and nude drawings. (...) Dürer was the first significant artist after Martin Schongauer to systematically mark his prints with a monogram [AD]. This indication of authorship soon became a seal of quality that was also imitated. (...) In 1505, he undertook a documented journey to Venice, ... where he also painted several portraits. ...
