- Royce, B.S. Lauren Bacall, 1992:t.p. (Lauren Bacall) p. 1, etc. (b. 9-16-24 as Betty Joan Perske in New York City; name later changed to Betty Bacal, and later to Betty Bacall; was assigned name "Lauren" weeks before completing her first film; though credited as Lauren, has always been known as Betty to family and friends; married Humphrey Bogart in 1945 and Jason Robards in 1961)
- New York times (online), viewed Aug. 13, 2014(in obituary published Aug. 12: Lauren Bacall; b. Betty Joan Perske, Sept. 16, 1924, Brooklyn; her parents were divorced when she was 6 years old, and her mother adopted the second half of her maiden name, Weinstein-Bacal; from then until her move to Hollywood, she was known as Betty Bacal; she added an "l" to her name because, she said, the single "l" caused "too much irregularity of pronunciation"; the name Lauren was given her by Howard Hawks before the release of her first film, but family and old friends called her Betty throughout her life; d. Tuesday [Aug. 12, 2014], New York, aged 89; actress whose provocative glamour elevated her to stardom in Hollywood's golden age and whose lasting mystique put her on a plateau in American culture that few stars reach; appeared in motion pictures and on stage)
