God’s first and last commandments to Abraham begin with the same words: Lech Lecha (Genesis 12:1 and 22:2, respectively). We see in this expression a framework for Abraham’s journey, intended to introduce a new culture to the world. The final commandment ends with God’s declaration – “For now I know that you fear God” (Genesis 22:12) – showing that Abraham had fulfilled his purpose. Generations after Abraham, God leads the generation liberated from Egypt towards the land of Canaan. The purpose of their journey is to undergo a process of change from a consciousness of slavery to a consciousness of independence. Unlike Abraham, this generation is unable to overcome the physical and spiritual difficulties they encounter. Overcoming these difficulties could have proven their determination and strong desire to reach the Promised Land and to achieve and internalize independence and renewal. However, in the end, this generation dies in the wilderness. In contrast, 75-year-old Abraham is able to extricate himself from all aspects of his past and embark on a new path – physically and mentally – for bringing this message into the world. With an English abstract. |
