الوصف Shortly after the Six-Day War, Israel’s Religious Affairs Ministryerected a gender partition at the Western Wall. This move de factoestablished the Western Wall plaza as an Orthodox synagogue andprovoked an acrimonious debate in Israel. Further controversyensued in 1968 after authorities rejected the Reform Movement’spetition to hold a prayer service without gender segregation atthe location. This article examines both controversies and theirultimate outcomes, focusing primarily on the question of the statusof Diaspora Jewry—and in particular American Jews—in view ofthe decisions made regarding the Western Wall’s religious character. The article also examines the current state of affairs at theWestern Wall where after a long struggle a prayer area to thesouth of the plaza was allocated to the ‘Women of the Wall’ andnon-Orthodox denominations. It is concluded that one of the mainfactors underlying this development is the growing influence ofAmerican Jewry on Jewish society in Israel, which is in line withthe conclusions reached previously in the work of Allon Gal.
