The article investigates the press coverage of Binyamin Ze’evHerzl’s death (on July 3rd, 1904) in three widely circulated Hebrewnewspapers: Ha’Tsfira, Hashkafa and Habatzelet. It is shown howjournalistic practices were used in order to praise Herzl and tomark his death as a meaningful, spectacular and resonant mediaevent. To this end, Herzl was described as divine and subliminaland as having a striking physical appearance. He was presentedas the greatest leader that the Jewish people has ever known, withemphasis on his vision for the establishment of the Jewish state.However, Herzl’s death exposed deep-seated tensions within theJewish community. Specifically, while Hashkafa accused Herzl’sopponents of being responsible for his death, Habatzelet refrainedfrom even mentioning Herzl’s death for a number of weeks and thenstrongly criticized Herzl’s funeral and burial as a betrayal of Jewishtradition, religious values and God.
