| الوصف |
In the wake of the 1948 War the village of Lifta wasone of over 400 villages which were abandoned bytheir original Arab inhabitants. The uprooting of itspopulation and that of nearby Arab neighborhoodsof West Jerusalem took place alongside the creationof a community of refugees among the city’s Jewishpopulace, and preceded the arrival of thousands ofnew immigrants to the city. Many of the immigrantswere settled in abandoned villages, including Lifta. This process was wrought with many difficulties, technical, political and social, but contrary to itseventual success in the nearby villages of Ein Keremand Malha, ultimately failed in Lifta. This failurestemmed from Lifta’s challenging physical featuresand the immigrant population’s social traits. Addedto these was inconsistency among the civilianand military authorities regarding the possibilityof permanent settlement in Lifta. The decisionmaking process was uneven, impeded by the lackof experience necessary for the execution of such acomplex operation, power politics and the differentinterests of all involved.
