The Canadian Jewish Farm School of Georgetown, Ontario was established by Morris Saxe for the purpose of bringing young Jews from Eastern Europe to Canada. He brought over 79 youths who were orphaned in World War I. The school functioned between 1927-1931, but the property was held by Saxe who tried to re-open the school up until 1946, but to no avail. The article describes the relationship between Canadian Jews who wished to promote Jewish immigration and the government's Department of Immigration, which made highly restrictive demands. The Department would only accept Jews who were intending to be farmers, and made sure to investigate if any immigrant Jews were trying to fool the government. The article also relates to intra-Jewish squabbles over immigration strategies and tactics, and the extent to which these affected the Departmental policy. |
