Examines Tal's views on the origins and nature of modern German antisemitism (from the Second to the Third Reich), concluding that his theory challenged the dominant, traditional view on the subject prevalent in Jewish and even more so Israeli historiography. While contemporary historians saw German antisemitism as an outgrowth of the Enlightenment, which ostensibly rejected the Jewish Other, Tal claimed that, on the contrary, the rejection of critical Enlightenment, with its humanist principles, first by the German liberals and then by the Nazis, and the adoption of a political theology based on the myths of "socio-political Darwinism" and "exclusive nationalism" generated antisemitism. Disagreeing with Jacob Katz and other historians, Tal argued that the German variant of modern antisemitism was not a continuation of Christian antisemitism, but rather contradicted Christian principles. The conservatives of the Wilhelmine era, as well as the Nazis rebelled against reason, democracy, and the principles of equality and the rights of man, and then against the presence of Jews. Tal rejected the assumption that the Holocaust was metahistorical, and argued that antisemitism and the Holocaust are "a chapter in the history of civilization reflected in Jewish history" rather than just another chapter in Jewish history.
