العنوان The role of IG Farben-Auschwitz in the construction of the Birkenau extermination camp.
هذا جزء من Yad Vashem Studies 38,2 (2010) 11-45
الوصف In early 1941 the IG-Farben firm decided to build a plant for synthetic rubber and fuel in the village of Monowitz, near Oświęcim, to be completed in 1943. Notes that the building of the plant was not completed even by 1945, although there had been cooperation between the firm and the Auschwitz camp. Due to bad planning, the firm used increasingly large numbers of camp prisoners for labor. From October 1942 the laborers were interned at the Buna camp, with their number reaching 11,600 in late 1944. In all, 41,000 prisoners were sent to work at the plant
due to the harsh conditions, 30,000 of the workers perished, most of them Jews. Argues that Himmler established the Birkenau camp in 1941 because Auschwitz I itself could not supply enough workers for IG-Farben and other German projects
in 1943 it became the main center for selection and extermination. (From the Bibliography of the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism - The Hebrew University of Jerusalem)
