العنوان Einstein on antisemitism : highlights from 1920, 1933, and 1938.
هذا جزء من Antisemitism International 3-4 (2006) 80-93
الوصف In his earliest comments on antisemitism, ca. 1920, Einstein's views were basically Zionist: the Jews were a nation that was persecuted because Jews and non-Jews were different and, therefore, antisemitism was inevitable in the diaspora. Einstein was skeptical about combating antisemitism and refused to participate in the defense activities of the Centralverein. He believed that antisemitism did help in preventing assimilation and the extinction of the Jewish people. Later, Einstein accepted the honorary presidency of the Ligue internationale contre l'antisémitisme (LICA), which he left in 1934. After the Nazi rise to power, Einstein faced an uneasy dilemma about criticizing Germany. Fear of reprisals, either against himself or other Jews, led to overcautious behavior. After the "Kristallnacht" pogrom, in his essay "Why Do They Hate the Jews?" (published in "Collier's", 26 November 1938), Einstein repeated his earlier idea that the Jews were serving the Germans as scapegoats, but added that the Jews were also hated because they symbolized intellectual freedom and ethical resistance to tyranny. At this time, his syncretic approach to antisemitism (including political, social, and eschatological interpretations) indicated that he, like his contemporaries, was perplexed. This situation was reflected in his relative silence in the 1940s on the subject of antisemitism.
