Explains post-1861 Russian antisemitism as an outgrowth of the rise of capitalism in the countryside and in the cities. The bearers of patriarchal consciousness (i.e. arch-conservatism), among them both peasants and the conservative intelligentsia, were united against the Jews, regarding them as the cause of social upheaval. The rise of capitalism was especially rapid in southern Ukraine therefore, this area became an arena for anti-Jewish pogroms in 1881. The authorities and the reactionary periodicals also played a role in instigating the pogroms. The plan of the organizers was to use the pogroms to relieve social tensions among the peasantry and to foster a sense of national unity among Russians. Contrary to the authorities' intentions, the pogroms of 1881 only fostered the revolution of 1905.
