Examines the port of Corfu during the 19th century with relation to its transition from being the capital of the British-protected Ionian State to a peripheral but important port of the Greek kingdom. Discusses the degree of participation of the Jewish population in the port economy, and the tolerance or intolerance of the Jews depending on the port's growth or decline. Despite a history of protection by the ruling authorities, business rivalry with the majority engendered a lack of cooperation. The 1864 union of the Ionian Islands with Greece offered the possibility of Jewish inclusion and equal rights. However, Greek nationalism spurred antisemitism, expressed in antisemitic discourse in the press from the mid-1880s, based on economic and racist stereotypes. This led to blood libel-fused mob persecution of Jews in 1891 and the resulting flight of over half of the Jewish population. The economic decline of the port was a factor in the failure of the society to acculturate its Jews.
