Discusses Queen Isabella's involvement in the affairs of the Jews of the "Camera Reginale" (the "Royal Chamber"), an area presented to her in 1470, upon her marriage to Ferdinand of Aragón, encompassing the cities of southeastern Sicily (its main city was Syracuse). This area received its own version of the order of expulsion in 1492 it was accompanied by an edict which specified the amount the Jews had to pay to cover the kingdom's loss of their future taxes. This money was deposited in the Aragonese treasury, and allocated for a Crusade against the Ottoman Turks. Due to the independence of the governor of the territory, who was not enthusiastic about the Inquisition, the moneys collected from Sicilian Conversos were not significant. Mentions the reinstatement of the Inquisition in Sicily in 1500, after its failure to achieve results in 1487. However, only 41 Syracusan Conversos were convicted in 50 years of Inquisitorial activity in Sicily. Pp. 81-85 present five documents from 1494-95.
