A study based largely on interviews with Holocaust survivors and non-Jewish witnesses of the Pechora camp in Transnistria, conducted by Golbert in 2001-02 in the Vinnytsya and Chernivtsy regions. Focuses on the experiences of Ukrainian Jews in the camp and their postwar representations of their experiences. Their memory of their experiences is affected by the Soviet policy of silencing the Holocaust, and more recently by the possibility of obtaining German compensation through the Claims Conference pension funds. Another problem is the collectivization of their Pechora memories, despite which many significant personal variations occur in the accounts. Among the controversies that arose between the survivors and the historians are the question whether Pechora was a camp or a ghetto, and who among the survivors suffered more. Believes that counter-memories guard against attempts to codify the Holocaust into simple categories and to obscure the complexity of Holocaust experiences and memories.
