Disputes the view of literary critics that the Jews who attack the host in the 15th-century Croxton "Play of the Sacrament" are referents to doubters in general, not to Jews. Connects the play to the 1181 ritual murder accusation concerning the death of Robert of Bury. Despite the play's setting in Aragón, highlights local elements, including the actual expulsion of Jews from Bury St. Edmunds a century earlier than from England as a whole. Argues that the play shows Jews re-enacting Christ's Passion in the form of a host desecration. The murder of little Robert was viewed by the audience in an eternal present, which emphasized the conception of the Jews as perpetual murderers (past, present, and future), reinforcing the stereotype of "the Jews" as the permanent enemy of Christ and Christendom.
