Presents an English translation of excerpts (parts of chs. 3, 6, and 11) from a Yiddish manuscript entitled "Di geshikhte fun der Vilijampoler idisher geto politsai" ("The History of the Jewish Police in Vilijampolė"), apparently written in 1942-43 in Kovno. Vilijampolė (Slobodka) was Kovno's Jewish district, where the ghetto was established. The excerpts deal with the behavior of the Jewish police during the "great action" - the deportation of 10,000 Jews to the Ninth Fort for execution organizational changes in the police after the "action" subsequent small "actions" and some internal matters of the Jewish police. They show the police as a body identifying with the ghetto population, not with the Germans, sometimes daring rescue attempts, and even tinged with Jewish nationalist spirit. Chs. 6 and 11 of the manuscript were published in Yiddish in "YIVO Bleter" 3 (1997). Pp. 183-202 contain an introduction describing the history of the Kovno ghetto and of its Jewish administration. (From the Bibliography of the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism - The Hebrew University of Jerusalem) Includes chapters from the manuscript written by the police in 1942 in the Kovno ghetto (pp. 203-240). See also in Hebrew. Appeared also in "Holocaust Critical Concepts in Historical Studies" IV (2004). |
