Discusses operettas by the Hamburg composer Reinhard Keiser that depict Jewish characters whose use of Yiddish is associated with economic and religious stereotypes. The image of Jews as thieves and cheats was linked with the local market, the place where Germans encountered Jews. Suggests that Keiser's librettist, Johann Philipp Praetorius, gained a knowledge of Yiddish from dictionaries that were made for the use of Christian missionaries. Concludes that Keiser was the source of these antisemitic elements, since they appeared also in works he composed with a different librettist. Despite their small number, Keiser's operatic depictions of Jews played a role in creating the antisemitic climate which erupted in the attack on Hamburg's Jews in 1730.
