Analyzes the decision-making process which led to the November pogrom of 1938 in Germany. Dismissing extant versions explaining the "Kristallnacht" pogrom (Goebbels' attempt to restore his standing in the Nazi movement, economic considerations, etc.), draws attention to the fact that the riots broke out in the wake of several attempts by Hitler to unleash a war against Britain, and coincided with bellicose pronouncements by Hitler. States that it was Hitler who stood behind the initiative to organize the mass pogroms. For him, it was a chance to goad Britain into war with Germany. In Hitler's mind, the wave of pogroms would stir up a controversy between the German and British press, as well as anti-Jewish and anti-British feelings in Germany and anti-German sentiments in Britain, which would then bring the "warmonger" Churchill to power, and he would declare war on Germany.
