Analyzes antisemitic and anti-Zionist writings published in Iran during the Pahlevi period. Discusses religious and secular works, propaganda and belles lettres, both original compositions and translations. Theological writings called for Islamic union in holy war against the Jews who, according to Shi'ite belief, sought to dominate the Islamic world and had falsified the Scriptures. On the other hand, Muhammad Reza Shah's pro-Western policy of open relations with Israel led to interest in Jewish culture and sympathy for Jews, especially among Bahais, freemasons, westernized intellectuals, and the urban middle class. However, the masses retained the traditional image of the impure Jew.
