Disputes the prevailing view that the Segovian Inquisition’s investigation and trial of Bishop Juan Arias Dávila of Segovia (in 1486-1491) was based on his Judaizing activities, even though charges of this nature were made against several of his relatives (who were Conversos). Rather, after 1485 he may have fallen out of favor with the Catholic Monarchs despite their initial support for his reforming activities. States that the fact that the Bishop transferred his case to Rome in 1490 indicates his loss of faith in the Castillian institutions, and that the tug of war between Spain and Rome over the case reflects the papacy’s reluctance to accept the growing control of Ferdinand and Isabella over the Spanish Church.
