Examines reactions to antisemitic statements by the British journalist and author G.K. Chesterton (1874-1939) found in the "Jewish Chronicle, " and its sister publication the "Jewish World, " edited by Leopold J. Greenberg, focusing on the First World War period. From 1916, Chesterton edited the weekly "New Witness, " a position he took over from his brother Cecil who was indicted for libelling the Jewish financier Godfrey Isaacs in the Marconi Affair. G.K. Chesterton, and his sister-in-law Ada, in the "New Witness, " continually accused Jews of lack of patriotism, cowardice, and promoting pacifism. In other works, he accused Jews of engaging in financial and political intrigues. Thus, the argument of Chestertonians that his antisemitic tendencies were not perceived as such in his time does not hold up.
