الوصف Analyzes hymns ("piyyutim") written during the period of the Crusades, reflecting the medieval Anglo-Jewish experience and the persecution of the Jews of England and France. Describes the blood libels at Blois (1171) and Troyes (1288) and the Jewish liturgy which was composed as a result. Discusses the persecution of English Jewry, the massacres in London (1189), and the anti-Jewish riots in York (1190) which resulted in the mass suicide of 150 Jews led by Yom Tov of Joigny, a well-known liturgist. Surveys a hymn written at the time of the expulsion of the Jews from England in 1290.
