Discusses Jewish historical accounts written in France and Germany during the 12th-14th centuries which appeared in various forms - chronicles, poems, and biographical works. The accounts describe persecutions and Jewish martyrdom, such as the pogroms during the First Crusade (1096) and the Second Crusade (1146-1147), the blood libel of Blois (1171) and attacks during the Black Death (1348). Shulvass focuses on the three extant accounts of the First Crusade - by Solomon ben Samson, Eliezer of Bonn, and an anonymous work - and the only extant chronicle on the Second Crusade, written by Ephraim of Bonn who witnessed the events. Notes that, curiously, many poems describing the blood libel of Blois were written by German liturgical poets.
