- America's Historical Newspapers, via WWW, Feb. 5, 2019:New York Herald, July 19, 1979 (Alexander Cummings; journalist; merchant; printer; publisher; raised a regiment of cavalry during the Civil War, and made colonel; named governor of the Territory of Colorado, 1866; later named collector of internal revenue for the Fourth District of Pennsylvania; at the time of his death was commercial agent for the U.S. at Ottawa; b. Lycoming, Pa.; d. Ottawa, last Wednesday)
- Alexander Cummings, the third governor of the Territory of Colorado from 1865-1867, was born in Williamsport, Pennsylvania on November 17, 1810. In February 1864 Cummings was made Superintendent of Troops of African Descent for the State of Arkansas, and for his efforts he was brevetted the rank of Brigadier General by President Johnson. Died while performing consular activities in Ottawa, Canada, in June of 1879 ( (Colorado State Archives website, viewed July 28, 2016) )
