  • Dictionary of African Biography, accessed November 26, 2014, via Oxford African American Studies Center database:(Tafawa Balewa, Abubakar; teacher; prime minister of Nigeria; born in December 1912 in the village of Tafawa Balewa, in Bauchi province, Northern Nigeria; received a teacher's certificate in history from the University of London's Institute of Education (1945-1946); elected vice president of the Northern Teacher's Association (1948); in 1949 he helped organize the Northern People's Congress (NPC), originally conceived as a cultural organization but which by 1951 had become a full-fledged political party; in 1951, in the Northern Nigeria's first elections, Balewa won seats in the House of Assembly and in the House of Representatives in Lagos, where he became a minister in the Central Council; became Nigeria's first prime minister after the NPC won the most seats in the 1957 elections; assassinated at a staged military coup; died in January 1966)
