  • Dictionary of African Biography, accessed December 29, 2014, via Oxford African American Studies Center database(Clapperton, Hugh; explorer, traveler; born 1788 in Annan, Scotland; went to sea at the age of thirteen, initially into the merchant marine and then into the Royal Navy; served as a petty officer in the Napoleonic wars; in the 1820s he participated in two expeditions; accompanied Dr. Walter Oudney, who had been appointed to lead an expedition of scientific discovery into the interior of Africa (later known as the Bornu Mission); collected extensive information on the geography of the Sokoto caliphate, including maps of southerly caravan routes; in June 1825 the mission was hailed as a great success and he persuaded the British government to approve a follow-up mission, under his command, to develop official relations with Sokoto and Bornu; his records are valued as exceptional insights into early nineteenth-century West Africa; died 1827 near Sokoto, Nigeria)

  • Wikipedia, January 9, 2026(Hugh Clapperton; Bain Hugh Clapperton; British naval officer and explorer of West and Central Africa; born 18 May 1788, Annan, Dumfriesshire; died 13 April 1827, Sokoto, aged 38; saw active service in the navy during the Napoleonic Wars, including the storming of Port Louis, Mauritius in November 1810, where he hauled down the French flag; went to Canada in 1814, promoted to lieutenant and to command of a schooner on the Canadian lakes; when the flotilla on the lakes was dismantled in 1817, he returned home on half-pay; in 1820 he transferred to Edinburgh, where he made the acquaintance of Walter Oudney, who aroused his interest in African exploration; Oudney was appointed to proceed to Bornu as consul, accompanied by Clapperton; they were later joined by Major Dixon Denham in Murzuk, who found them both very sick; they proceeded south, but a deep antipathy had developed between Clapperton and Denham; they were the first white men to see Lake Chad, and were well received by sultan Sheikh al-Kaneimi in Kuka, capital of the Bornu Empire; Clapperton and Oudney left on 14 December to explore the course of the Niger River, but Oudney died soon afterward; Clapperton continued along through Kano to Sokoto, where by order of Sultan Muhammed Bello he was obliged to stop, though the Niger was only a five-day journey west; he returned to Kuka by way of Zaria and Katsina; Clapperton and Denham departed Kuka for Tripoli in August 1824, reaching there on 26 January 1825, and arriving in England on 1 June 1825; an account of their travels was published in 1826, titled Narrative of Travels and Discoveries in Northern and Central Africa ... (1826); Clapperton was the first European to describe the Hausa states from personal observation, which he had visited soon after the establishment of the Sokoto Caliphate by the Fula; in his second expedition, he arrived at Kano and then Sokoto, intending to continue to Bornu and renew his acquaintance with Sheikh al-Kaneimi; however the Fulani were at war with al-Kaneimi and Sultan Bello refused him permission to leave; after months of detention, afflicted with malaria, dysentery, and depression, he died; in 1829 the Journal of a Second Expedition into the Interior of Africa, &c., by Clapperton appeared posthumously)
