Mishnah Sotah 7:1 lists a group of prayers and liturgical readings that can be recited in any language. The next mishnah (7.2) lists prayers and liturgical readings that can only be recited in Hebrew. The remaining mishnayot in the chapter clarify the items that appear in mishnah 2, including the blessings recited in Hebrew by the high priest. Mishnah Sotah 7.7 explains that these blessings were recited by the high priest on the Day of Atonement after the reading of the Torah in the Sanctuary (as also described in Mishnah Kippurim, chapter 7). I argue, however, that the explanation in M. Sotah 7.7 creates textual difficulties. Accordingly, I propose that M. Sotah 7.2 preserves a tradition that appears in Ben Sira, which mentions blessing the people as recited by the high priest at the end of the service. This blessing, as other scholars have noted, is obliquely alluded to in several Tannaitic sources. On my interpretation, the later Tannaim of Sotah, no longer familiar with this custom, offer a different and novel interpretation of the blessings of the high priest mentioned in Mishnah Sotah 7.2. |
