Criticizes the document issued by the Vatican in 1998, "We Remember: A Reflection on the Shoah." This document, over a decade in the making, failed to point out the responsibility of the Church for preparing the ground for 19th-20th-century antisemitism. Elevating some individual churchmen who deplored Nazi antisemitism, it fails to mention that the Catholic Church acquiesced in Nazi racism and cooperated with the Nazis in many ways. Moreover, it presents Pope Pius XII as an active opponent of Nazi antisemitism. Pius XII, who indeed attempted to intervene at times to halt deportations of Jews, failed to take a firm stand against the Nazi genocide, and thus did not meet the moral obligations of the papacy. The inaction of the Church hierarchy contrasts with the heroism of those ordinary Catholics who helped Jews, but it is the Church as an institution which "We Remember" tries to declare blameless. The imperfections of "We Remember" are a matter of great concern.
