Eli (Ilya) Valk (1944, Buinsk) is a Jewish activist and refusenik from Riga. He was born to Zionist parents. In 1945 the family returned to Riga and from a young age he attended a synagogue in the city. Eli Valk became active in the Riga Jewish community in the late 1950s-early 1960s. He participated in the attempt to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust in Rumbula, maintained contacts with Israeli tourists and diplomats, and was one of the leaders of the Jewish underground groups in Riga. In 1971 he immigrated to Israel and worked for the Israeli governmental liaison organization “Nativ”, that maintained ties with Soviet Jews. He is the chairman of the “Association of Latvian and Estonian Jews in Israel.” The private collection of Eli Valk consists of Jewish historical and religious literature and Jewish samizdat, books, articles, information bulletins and reports on Soviet Jewry and migration. It includes materials originating from Jewish Western organizations who led the struggle for Soviet Jewry. There are papers of the National Conference on Soviet Jewry (NCSJ), the World Conference on Soviet Jewry (WCSJ), 35 Women's Campaign for Soviet Jewry, and other organizations.
