Mowshowitch, David

David Mowshowitch (1887-1957) was a Jewish communal leader in England. Mowshowitch was born in Russia and settled in London around the time of World War I. From 1915 he was active on the Board of Deputies of British Jews and in particular was responsible for ties with Eastern European Jews. He often travelled abroad to report on the situation of the Jewish population in different countries and in 1915-1917 was a representative of the Conjoint Foreign Committee (formed by the Board and the Anglo-Jewish Association in 1878) in Stockholm. When the Committee was dissolved in 1917 and Lucien Wolf headed the newly established Joint Foreign Committee in 1918, Mowshowitch became Wolf’s secretary. Since David Mowshowitch was an amateur historian and a Yiddishist, he wrote a book on the Yiddish language and published translations on sections of the Bible in Yiddish. He was also an active member of the London YIVO Committee. The collection includes David Mowshowitch’s writings and numerous documents by Lucien Wolf including writings, a diary from 1919, and correspondence with Jewish and non-Jewish public figures and organizations from different countries: Vera Figner, Simon Dubnow, Claude Montefiore, Hilsferein der Deutschen Juden, UK Foreign Office and more. Wolf’s correspondence relates to the Beilis Trial in 1913, Zionists organizations and activities, situation of the Jews in Ukraine after the 1917 revolution, anti-Jewish incidents in Bavaria in 1923, the situation of Jews in Lithuania in the 1930s and more. The collection also includes a letter-memorandum from 1929 sent to Sir Austen Chamberlain with some observations regarding the protection of minorities. The collection includes materials of the Conjoint Foreign Committee and Joint Foreign Committee covering the activities of these bodies, Jewish life and activities of various Jewish organizations in Russia, Poland, Romania, Germany, Eretz Israel, Austria, the USA and other countries. The collection holds records on pogroms in Ukraine in 1919, a report from 1926 on conditions of the Jewish communities of Syria and reports from Baghdad on the anti-Jewish movement in Iraq in 1934. There are also papers regarding Aleksandr Kerensky (the Prime Minister of the Russian Provisional Government) from 1917-1920, press clippings, political cartoons, British publications and materials from the Paris Peace Conference in 1946-1947. The collection also comprises many publications and materials of Jewish and Non-Jewish Organizations including Anglo-Jewish Association, the American Jewish Committee, Canadian Jewish Congress, South African Jewish Board of Deputies, World Jewish Congress, Assembly of Captive European Nations (ACEN), United Nations and more -- اقرأ أكثر
