The collection consists of personal documents, early correspondence with his family in Dotzheim and his fiancée (1830-1831), numerous sermons (1832-1849) along with other manuscripts, correspondence in his capacity as rabbi in Bernburg; in addition correspondence about vacancies, with publishers and with the Ministry, family correspondence with son and daughter, and a family tree (1931).

attended the yeshiva of Rabbi Herz Scheyer in Mainz, studying at the same time secular subjects under Michael Creizenach. Later he accepted a position as private tutor in Herborn, Nassau, where he remained until 1824. In that year he entered the University of Marburg and Göttingen, where he studied pedagogy, history, and Oriental languages.
In 1827 he was appointed religious instructor in Eschwege. While teaching in Eschwege, he wrote Yesodei ha-Torah (1831), a popular work on religious and moral instruction. In 1830 he received his doctorate from the University of Gießen, and in 1831 he became the Landesrabbiner of Anhalt-Bernburg, with responsibility for the rural communities of Ballenstedt, Coswig, Hoym, Harzgerode and Gr.-Mühlingen. In 1832 Herxheimer married Helene-Lea Sieskind (died 1864) from Ballenstedt, a niece of Rabbi Sabel Egers
In addition to educating the young, his focus was on promoting agricultural knowledge among the Jewish population. Among the most famous of his works are the translation of the Bible into German with commentary "Der Pentateuch im Hebräischen Texte mit Worttreuer Übersetzung und mit Fortlaufender Erklärung," 1841-1848
"Die Propheten und Hagiographen im Text mit Übersetzung und Fortlaufendem Commentar," 1841-48
"Israelitische Glauben- und Pflichten-Lehre," 1836.
